Insights into how to successfully navigate the unique
situations and challenges that arise for people with the trait
of high sensitivity and the people in their lives.
Welcome! First off, we want to give credit and thanks to
the wonderful Dr. Elaine Aron who first introduced all of us to this
important inherited trait of high sensitivity and who wrote the landmark
1996 book The Highly Sensitive Person:
How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You. And, make sure you
visit her website www.hsperson.com.
Now, as an introduction to the trait of high sensitivity,
see if some of these statements resonate with you, or relate to someone important in your life...
You, your partner, or someone important to you
have a heightened awareness of subtleties in your environment, whether it's sight,
sound, touch, taste, or smell.
You can become stressed
out and upset when overwhelmed and may find it necessary to get away,
maybe into a darkened room, to seek solitude, relief and comfort.
You are very creative.
You are very conscientious, hard working, and
meticulous, but may become uncomfortable and less efficient or productive when being watched or scrutinized.
You feel compelled to file and
organize things and thoughts, also enjoy simplicity and may become overwhelmed
or even immobilized by chaos, clutter, or stress.
You are very uncomfortable when feeling things are getting out of your control.
You get a sense of comfort and
well being when around a lake, river, stream, the ocean, or even a fountain.
You may experience mood swings,
sometimes occurring almost instantly and can also be affected by other people's
moods, emotions and problems.
You have a deep, rich, inner
life, are very spiritual, and may also have vivid dreams.
You are very intuitive and you feel that you can
usually sense if someone isn't telling the truth or if something else is wrong.
You get concerned and think or worry
about many things, and have also been told "you take things too personally."
You have had the experience of "cutting people out" of your life.
You were considered quiet,
introverted, timid, or shy as a child.
Here
are a few more to consider... Can be startled easily. Cautious in new situations.
May have trouble sleeping. Extra sensitive to pain. Don't like crowds (unless they are kindred spirits).
Avoids violent movies and TV shows. Has a deep respect and appreciation of nature, music and art.
Do some, or many, of
these statements ring true for you, your partner, or someone important
in your life? If so, you or they may be a highly sensitive person or
"HSP." Whether you already know something about the trait and
temperament of highly sensitive people, or if this is your first
introduction to the subject, welcome! The goal and intent of this
website is to impart information, provide support and be a resource to
individuals with the trait of high sensitivity and for the people in
their lives.
Listen to Jim Hallowes' latest radio interviews
Jim was the in-studio guest on Los Angeles' radio popular long-running The Aware Show with Lisa Garr, on KPFK 90.7 FM,
talking about the trait of high sensitivity and Highly Sensitive People. According to Lisa, The Aware Show is "dedicated to
communicating information to inspire positive growth and change. Our goal is an increased awareness and healing on an individual
and planetary level." Listen to the complete show or you can order an audio CD-ROM from the Highly Sensitive People Gift Store.
HSP "Meetup" in West L.A. on Aug. 18, 7:45-9:30 p.m.
You are invited to our HSP "Meetups" in Los Angeles are held on the 3rd
Wednesday. To find out more about
the L.A. Meetups visit the Internet Links page and click on the Highly
Sensitive People Meetup link to learn more, sign up and join our HSP
Meetup group, and to RSVP for our next "Meetup." I'm also a certified
WANT® Institute Trainer in Androgynous
Semantic Realignment (A.S.R.), the patented system of language and
communication, so I'm able to discuss Dr. Allen's work, too.
We meet at the new SHARE Center, 6666 Green Valley Circle, Culver City, CA 90230 across the 405 Freeway from the Hughes Center, 7:45 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Suggested $10 donation is appreciated to help pay for the room. By the way, for those of you not located in Southern California and unable to attend our monthly meetings, we've tried an experiment and videotaped the most recent session. A DVD (or maybe even a downloadable video) will soon be available to show what happens at a typical HSP Meet-Up. If you're interested in viewing this, please sign into the Meet-Up page and let Jim know!

These are sure to be interesting evenings learning about and discussing
the trait of high sensitivity. If you're an HSP, they'll be evenings of
learning to understand yourself better, and if you're a Non-HSP you'll
learn how to better understand the Highly Sensitive People in your life.
And, because HSPs make up about 20% of the population, you are sure to
come into contact with many of them, so why not make the most of those
relationships; social, business and romantic.
Over the years since I founded HighlySensitivePeople.com, many HSPs have often asked if I'd be able to do one-on-one coaching with them. I'm happy to say I've made arrangements for office space in Newport Beach and Los Angeles. In addition, many people find it more comfortable to do coaching sessions by telephone. So if you'd be interested in either of these options, I'd like to make an announcement:
New! Personal Coaching for the Highly Sensitive Person!
I am also happy to answer any personal
questions you may have on a one-to-one basis about whether you are an
HSP, and how to deal with the Trait of High Sensitivity in your life.
And there are a few spaces available for my exclusive Cognitive Behavioral Coaching for the HSP sessions, offered in person for those living in the Los Angeles area, or by telephone.
Jim Hallowes Coaching for Highly Sensitive People
|
As the Associate Director of the Dr. Pat Allen WANTо
Institute ("Educators of Effective Communications Strategies"), with 10
years of experience as a Certified ASR™ Coach specializing in Pat's
Androgynous Semantic Realignment techniques, I am qualified to guide
you in:
- How to make decisions rationally rather than emotionally
- How to ask for what you truly want, and how to say "no" to what you don't want in your life
- How to effectively handle relationships, both with other HSPs and non-HSPs, including family, co-workers, and romantic
relationships
- How to improve your communication skills — how to negotiate with love, rather than intimidate with fear or seduce with guilt
This is not your typical "life coaching" that is offered by New Age experts (the ooey-wooey
kind), but rather practical, evidence-backed, scientifically based
therapies and psychological techniques that have been proven to help
people develop sound interpersonal communication skills, improve
self-esteem, and deal with much of the emotional turmoil that comes
from day-to-day personal interactions in a sometimes very insensitive
world.
Hear what communications expert Dr. Pat Allen has
to say about Jim's coaching.

This powerful approach is based on Transactional Analysis (TA), the established
neuropsychological approach to permanently improve one's communication
skills, and applies the Dr. Pat Allen WANTо
Institute's patented technique of ASR, a profoundly effective way of
integrating basic TA principles while taking into account the
male/female (yin and yang) energies that co-exist in all of us. It has
helped thousands of HSPs to understand their unique gift. In this video
testimonial, Dr. Pat Allen enthusiastically endorses Jim's work.
To see if you may benefit from Jim Hallowes' Coaching for Highly Sensitive People you can call anytime 310-390-4767. You'll learn a great deal about yourself and you
can see how ASR coaching will benefit you, as it has so many others.
Or, just send an email to Jim@HighlySensitivePeople.com to request a brochure that describes my unique approach, services and reasonable session rates.
P.S. I invite you to visit Dr. Pat Allen's websites
www.drpatallen.com or
www.wantinstitute.org
to learn more about her series of classes that so many people have been
requesting and waiting for. Many aspects of Coaching for Highly Sensitive People
are based on her unique theories of Androgynous Semantic Realignment®, a
method of adjusting your use of language to re-balance the energies in your mind
and body, and effect dynamic changes in your lifestyle, along with her Amigo Talk® rules for maintaining a harmonious and loving relationship with romantic partner. And great news, the cost
of this training may also be fully tax deductible because the WANT Institute is
a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Educational Organization.
Hello to everyone. My name is Edward and Jim usually refers to me as his "web-guru" because I've been helping him create and maintain the Highly Sensitive People website for six years now. He also sometimes uses me as a kind of "case study" in his lectures because, well, I can relate to a lot of what he says about how an HSP experiences the world. Working with him has been a rewarding and educational experience, and we recently decided it would be great to broaden the scope of the HSP site to include a lot of what's currently being discussed about the Trait of High Sensitivity.
One of the things I've found is lots of people doing one of the things Jim recommends, and that's keeping a journal. Of course, these days they're called "blogs" and they're up on the 'net and published for all the world to see. It's fascinating what various HSPs have been writing and especially what they've been doing to help turn their gifted trait into an asset. So we thought it a good idea to share links to some of these postings with everyone coming to our own website.
What I'm going to do here is keep a running log of some of the more interesting and informative HSP blogs that we encounter, along with a bit of nattering and observations, and maybe a resource or two. The kind of stuff that Jim himself is just too busy to follow up on regularly. And we're open to any ideas or comments you may want to make, as well.
For starters, then, here are some recent postings that many of you will find of interest:
Creative Catalyst for You by Judith Fine-Sarchielli
Judith is a self-avowed HSP, a friend and studying under Dr. Pat Allen and is a fabulous resource of information, helping edit Pat's recent book "The Truth About Men Will Set You Free", lecturing her class on VisionBoards and recently helming her own all-day workshop on gluten-free Mediterranean Cuisine (it was delicious!). In her seventh decade, she's still excited about learning. In fact, her blog recently reviewed new discoveries on aging and how the brain is plastic and can actually re-create itself. She declares that old dogs can learn new tricks...even HSP dogs!
27 Tips For Navigating College As an HSP by Andrea Runyan
If you're younger, taking on the world for the first time is daunting enough for the hardy 85% who are gregarius and gung-ho about starting college life...for an HSP it can be a shattering experience. Here are some kindly words of wisdom to remember when overstressed, distracted by conflicting demands or emotionally distraught at being away from the security of home for the first time. This post was reprinted on our colleague Douglas Eby's site, itself a great resource for highly sensitive professionals, especially actors.
Bio-Electric Shield.com
This site urges you to protect your health by calming your mind, always good advice for us HSPs, and had a recent post which bore the provocative title "Are You Crazy or Are You a Highly Sensitive Person?" Jim had some reservations about including it here, because they're selling what he calls an "ooey-wooey" negative-energy shield device. But they also featured a letter from Dr. Elaine Aron herself, and that's a pretty strong endorsement!
Social Anxiety Disorder Blog by Arlin Cuncic.
If you have been diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and are also an HSP, your goal in life should not be to become gregarious (!) but rather, to eliminate your anxiety in social settings. So in whatever therapy you undertake for the one condition, remember you need to acknowledge your innate need for time alone. Arlin will help you address both issues. She also has a newsletter and a forum.
And finally, Dr. Judith Orloff has a new book out, Second Sight,
which deals with how to tap into your own inner wisdom. Jim already bought a copy and we're both really impressed with her story of learning to cope with being an HSP. The book is available on Amazon, in bookstores, and direct from her website, which also lists a wide variety of self-help books and aids that
draw on her personal experience and years of clinical practice to provide practical suggestions that enable even the most sensitive among us to protect ourselves from the negativity we encounter each day and ensuring our emotional and psychological well-being. She's a board-certified psychiatrist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, and also a colleague of Dr. Pat Allen, so we're doubly impressed!
A Special Note: Dr. Pat Allen has made arrangements to have one of the books she has based her therapies on made available, at no charge. She's made arrangements with the publisher to give away a FREE COPY of Napoleon Hill's famous book, Think & Grow Rich — that's the book about the power of Positive Thinking that much of the Law of Attraction is based on. There are millionaires today who credit much of their success to the "secrets" they read in this book, including some of the people in the movie "The Secret" itself.
Anyway, it's a great deal from the publisher...just tell them where to send it, and they'll send you the number one success book of all time.
Get the details here:
Get Your Free Book!
And really, feel free to pass this on to your friends, too. They can get a copy of the book, too, if they act right away. This is one of my favorite books. I know they'll love it and thank you for your thoughtfulness!
